Raspberry Pi 2 model B

The Raspberry Pi 2 Model B is the second-generation Raspberry Pi. It replaced the original Raspberry Pi 1 Model B+ in February 2015.

With an ARMv7 processor, the Pi mark 2 will be capable of running the likes of Snappy Ubuntu Core and Microsoft Windows 10, when it becomes available. The Raspberry Pi-compatible version of Windows 10 will, in fact, be free of charge to makers.

This board is powered from 5V adapter with micro USB connectivity and runs on operating systems such as Raspbian, RaspBMC, Arch Linux, RISC OS, OpenELEC, Pidora and Microsoft Windows10.

It has the same board layout as the Model B+, so all cases and addon boards are compatible. GPIO is 100% compatible with the Model B+ and Model A+ boards and the first 26 pins are identical to the Model B and Model A boards to provide full backward compatibility across all boards.

V1.1

The Raspberry Pi 2 was released in February 2015 and initially featured the BCM2836 SoC which contains a 900 MHz 32-bit quad-core ARM Cortex-A7 processor with 1 GB RAM.

V1.2

The revision 1.2 was a minor revision of the Raspberry Pi 2 Model B v1.1, with some minor hardware changes. Manufactured by Sony UK and Embest.

Previous versions of Raspberry Pi 2 Model B use the BCM2836 SoC, which contains a quad-core ARM Cortex-A7 processor. The new release Raspberry Pi 2 Model B v1.2 board uses BCM2837, which contains a 64-bit quad-core ARM Cortex-A53 processor. It’s the same as that in the Raspberry Pi 3 Model B, but underclocked to 900 MHz.

The BCM2837 is the Broadcom chip used in the Raspberry Pi 3 Model B, later models of the Raspberry Pi 2 Model B, and the Raspberry Pi Compute Module 3. The underlying architecture of the BCM2837 is identical to the BCM2836. The only significant difference is the replacement of the ARMv7 quad core cluster with a quad-core ARM Cortex A53 (ARMv8) cluster.

The ARM Cortex-A53 processor is also used in Amazon Fire tablets, including the Fire HD 8 and the Fire HD 10 (the latter also includes Cortex-A72 cores) as well as the Nintendo Switch. It is also used in some Amazon Echo Show models such as the Echo Show 5, Echo Show 8, and Echo Show 5 (2nd Gen). It was announced October 30, 2012.
